Chateau de Courances - Profile

General Information

As you stroll under the overhanging trees, across the lawns, tracing out lines of perspective along the water’s edge, you will, with all your senses, discover five centuries of garden history. A day at Courances offers something quite different to the experience of visiting any other historic garden. The monumental and the spectacular co-exist with the intimate and the secret. Nature and culture are equally apparent, layered by history and shaped with a great sense of freedom. This style from the second half of the sixteenth century was to inspire Le Nôtre one century later. There is a simplicity in the way the estate is run which creates a sense of calm-or maybe the calm inspires the simplicity. This château and its park form an estate that has been in the same family since 1872. We also hope you will visit us again soon, as from season to season, depending on where your steps have led you or who has made the bouquets in the salons, the visit is a different experience every time.

Additional Information

Recent historical research has come to challenge many of the accepted ideas about the creation of Courances, especially concerning André Le Nôtre's contribution to this seventeenth-century garden. This, and the supposed exclusive restoration by the Duchênes in the early twentieth century, have been revealed to have no historical basis. A more in-depth analysis of historical documents has brought to light a series of facts that explain the preserved beauty of a park which, at the start of this, the twenty-first century, reveals itself as a highly successful synthesis of French garden history. Indeed, what is most striking is the permanence and longevity-more than five centuries-of the main formal layout created in the second half of the sixteenth century. And yet, each generation, each successive owner, has remained attentive to the specific characteristics of the property: the lack of relief, the profusion of water and the high density of woodland. Each has left their mark, reflecting the changing tastes in garden design, without ever disrupting the overall harmony.
