The mines lie in rugged, heavily wooded country, 32 kilometres east of Glen Innes on the Red Range Road. Totaling over 60 separate workings scattered over a fairly small area, the mines were originally worked for bismuth in the late 1800''s. Around the turn of the century they became Australia''s principal source of molybdenum and during World War 2 provided limited amounts of piezoelectric quartz for the radio industry.
