Hahn Winery - Profile

General Information

Along California's central coast lies the renowned Monterey County appellation and within that, the Santa Lucia Highlands, home to the Hahn Family’s vineyard estate. Nicolaus (“Nicky”) Hahn and his wife Gaby discovered a love for California wines in the mid-1970's. A two-year search led them to the breathtaking beauty and ideal growing conditions of Monterey County where they subsequently purchased two ranches on which to plant vineyards and start a winery. Their first wines, released under the Smith & Hook label, received numerous awards and critical acclaim. What makes up the soul of a wine? Or a specific vineyard site? Or a wine region? It’s more than terroir, technically, the soil and climate; it’s that plus the sum total of the perseverance, dedication, commitment and simple trial and error of the people who came together at a specific place and time, with a vision to plant the vineyard and create the wine. Nicolaus (Nicky) and Gaby Hahn found their first vineyards in the late ‘70s in Monterey County. In 1988, sensing the potential of the region, Nicky Hahn advocated a new wine appellation and his pioneering effort ultimately led to the creation of one of the most exciting and highly-lauded U.S. wine appellations today: the Santa Lucia Highlands (SLH). Hahn Estates now owns 650 SLH vineyard acres that range in elevation from 200 to 1,200 feet. The Hahn SLH wines, which epitomize the appellation as well as the passion and commitment of the Hahn Family, are created from the fruit of these meticulously planted hillside vineyards. These wines are produced completely in the Santa Lucia Highlands from the ground to the barrel to the bottle at Hahn Estates Winery.
