Tibetan Handicraft Emporium - Profile

General Information

The art of weaving was introduced to Nepal in the 1960s by the Tibetan refugees. This endangered art has been preserved by the tibetans-in-exile and appreciated by the world over. The process begins with the shearing of wool from the highland tibetan sheep. The wool is carded, spun ,dyed and woven all by hand and thus requires a lot of man-hour. The weaving is done on a vertical loom using the knotting technique. This weaving technique is distinct from other styles of weaving done in countries like India,Turkey, etc. These days different varieties of carpets are available in the market, in addition to the traditional 100% woollen carpets. The newer varieties include wool and silk , 100% silk , wool and hemp , 100% hemp, etc. Same goes for the designs as well, in keeping up with the changing times, the tibetan carpets are now not just limited to the traditional patterns. Different modern designs, geometric or floral are available in a huge range of colors.

Additional Information
