In a report prepared by the Institute for Leisure Economics, over 50% of active golfers were described as coming from wealthy families, who put great value on prestige and sought leisure activities considered exclusive as a lifestyle trait. Golf was seen as being essential for both health and social appearance. The latest golf survey shows that the golfer is free-spending, with the daily output of a golf tourist estimated to be 250, and the total expenditure of all golfers in excess of 540 million euros annually, 60% of which represented by golf travellers. Regarding the future development of golf in Austria, surveys show that golf is on the increase. 5,000 Austrians played golf regularly in 1984. At present there are already over 108,000 golfers in the country. A further 52,000 play golf occasionally, making a total of more than 160,000 golf players in Austria in 2011.
