Waterfront Promenade: A New Landmark for Brunei

Bandar Seri Begawan, 3 June 2011 - With an evening of spectacular firework displays, cultural performances, and a floating parade of brightly-decorated boats, the new Bandar Seri Begawan Waterfront Promenade was officially launched by His Royal Highness Prince Haji Al-Muhtadee Billah, the Crown Prince of Brunei.

Large crowds of locals and tourists joined hundreds of officials on May 28, 2011 to welcome the eagerly-anticipated new addition to the capital’s urban landscape, a public space that is expected to bring new life to the downtown area, especially in the evenings.

Built at a cost of B$5.6 million (about US$4.5 million), the Waterfront Promenade includes facilities such as ample parking space, public toilets, trendy restaurants, colorful night lighting, and open areas that can serve for recreational activities or for the staging of events.

Developed around the old Royal Customs House, a heritage building that will be used by the Museums Department as an exhibition gallery, and right in the heart of the city within walking distance to prominent landmarks such as the Yayasan Shopping Complex and the iconic Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque, while overlooking the historic Kampong Ayer - the world’s largest water village on stilts - across the river, the Waterfront Promenade will certainly become an attractive tourist attraction for those visiting the capital of Bandar Seri Begawan.

Brunei Tourism is the Tourism Development Department in Brunei’s Ministry of Industry and Primary Resources, in charge of the international promotion and marketing of Brunei as a tourism destination of choice, acting as secretariat and executor of Brunei Tourism Board’s mandate.
