Kigali, 6 November 2011 - Rwanda Development Board (RDB), in the process to diversify tourism products that it has been developing under the ST-EP project, will officially launch the Congo Nile Trail on November 25, 2011 in Gisenyi. This is a new hiking product on Lake Kivu shores that creates the western corridor, which links Nyungwe and Volcanoes, as well as beautiful sceneries of Lake Kivu surroundings.
In a press conference held at RDB headquarters, the Head of Tourism and Conservation at RDB, Rica Rwigamba, explained that: “With the launch of the Congo Nile Trail, Rwanda Tourism is further diversifying and sharing its cultural and natural heritage with the world.”
The Congo Nile Trail is an exciting ten-day hiking experience, which covers a wide range of fascinating attractions on Lake Kivu shores, with a distance of 227 kilometers stretching from Rubavu to Rusizi via Karongi and Nyamasheke districts. The trail offers among other attractions the best coffee and tea experiences, with sceneries beautiful beyond imagination
“The trail can be walked in 10 days or completed by bicycle in 5 days and by 4—4 car in 3 days. Along the way, the Congo Nile Trail includes 8 base camps, 2 main paths, and 4 secondary trails, which all make this a breathtaking “bucket list” once-in-a-lifetime hiking experience,” added Rica.
Preceding the official launch will be a competition dubbed the Mountain Bike Motion that will take place from November 24-25, 2011 in which out of the 20 available places, the quickest mountain bike rider to complete the over 80-kilometer-long race (40 kilometers there and 40 kilometers back the next day) and get back to Gisenyi, will win 1 of the 2 brand-new Mountain Bikes on offer.
The race is being organized in partnership with Rwandan Adventure Cycles, Paradis Malahide, and Kinunu Coffee Washing Station.
Rwanda tourism has been in the process of diversifying its tourism products with the recent launch of birding in Rwanda and cultural tourism promotion, in addition to revival and elevation of Gishwati National Conservation Park as the newest national park in Rwanda.
