The story of this gallery of modern arts bearing a resemblance to a museum dedicated to Asian fine art and craft, is above all the story of a photojournalism experience, a motorbike solitary journey going from March to October 2012, out of the beaten tracks throughout Southeast Asia (Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, Thailand, Indonesia, and later, Myanmar). After having wandered some 22.000 kilometres, and met a myriad of artists and craftsmen, I came up with the concept of Rock Around Asia. Being absolutely fascinated by these countries where adventure still has a meaning, and where unforeseen events are the root of optimism, I wanted to tell the story of my journey through the wonder of magnificent items that moved me, and that will never leave the countries they were made in, to the great sadness of art lovers looking for exceptional objects. All the objects on display are original creations from the South East of Asia, very rare productions for most of them, made by talented artists, and out of the finest material. Unfortunately, these artists are unable to promote their work, for many reasons: remoteness, limited access to communication technology, authoritarian political regimes seeing art as a means of subversion and so on, so forth. The permanent collection is composed of about four-hundred exceptional fine artworks highly representative of the local savoir-faire, inspired by religion, beliefs, myths, tradition, frustrations, dreams, happiness, and by the creativity of the artists. The materials used are amongst the finest, such as numerous types of wood, crocodile wood, Tanaka, mango wood, teak, hibiscus, gold leaf, coins, bronze and marble, all locally produced.
