Tropical Inn Key West - Profile

General Information

Strategically situated in the heart of Old Town, the Tropical Inn enjoys an incomparable, walk-to-everything location. Exuding the characteristically unassuming style that personifies Key West, the Inn is small enough to be personable but large enough to be private. Its mellow vibe plays perfect counterpart to the hyper-active Key West scene, impossibly close yet very far away from your stylish and tranquil retreat.

The historic Main House and scattering of charming garden cottages are embraced by an expansive palm garden, the focal points of which are a sparkling waterfall pool and bubbling spa. As eclectic as Key West itself, accommodations range from funky to fabulous, each beautifully appointed to the finest detail and caringly attended by genial but unobtrusive staff, assuring a distinctively memorable experience ... all tucked unassumingly away amidst a tantalizing array of diversions, right at the midpoint of one of America's most renowned promenades, legendary Duval Street.

As it has for so many, the Tropical Inn will surely become for you "that great little place in Key West" that you sort of make your own... planning to return even before you have left.

Additional Information

The two-story Main House at the Tropical Inn dates to the late 1800s and is typical of an architectural style known locally as "Conch House." Vernacular in design -- that is, concerned more with the functional than the decorative or monumental -- it rests on piers for air circulation and its metal roof reflects the tropical sun. Originally a single-family home, it has also seen use as apartments, a wicker repair shop on the first floor with boarding house rooms above, and today, as one of the more upscale boutique hotels of Key West.

Many of Key West's earliest settlers were from the Bahamas. Ours is a typical Conch House, crafted of wood and exhibiting signs of being constructed by a seafaring carpenter. It pays homage to classic New England seacoast styles, while employing adaptations from Caribbean housing to deal with our tropical climate and modestly hinting at its Victorian vintage in room layout and detailing. Its louvered shutters and shady verandas were originally designed to maximize circulation of sea breezes and protection from intense sunshine. Today, they provide comfortable spaces in which to enjoy Key West's signature indoor-outdoor lifestyle.

Rooms in the Main House have been designed to maintain the original character of the structure. Central air conditioning and private baths have been thoughtfully introduced so as to minimally impose today's comforts on the original floor plan.

Furnishings are reflective of the architectural vintage of the house, creatively interpreted for contemporary use. The result is an appealingly eclectic ambience. Beautiful beds of teak, mango wood, brass, and iron complement antique dressers and armoires. Judicious accents of wicker and rattan conjure a decidedly West Indies plantation vibe. Indulgently comfortable bedding, luxurious, all-cotton linens, and spa-quality bath amenities assure blissful relaxation, while light, breezy fabrics and Caribbean colors complete the casually elegant tropical living experience for which Key West is known.

The Historic Queen rooms in the Main House are situated near the Duval Street verandas. Alfresco Queen accommodations enjoy private balconies or patios with garden views.
